๐Ÿ Cleared for takeoff

An update on the trash strike, a new museum coming to Beverly, a bill of clean health on our drinking water, and plenty of awesome events.

Good morning, Beverly. How about that storm on Sunday night? If you heard a grown man scream at an alarmingly high pitch, it wasnโ€™t me. But it might have been the Mystery Urinator.

In todayโ€™s Beverly Buzz:

  • The latest on the trash strike ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ โ™ป๏ธ

  • Coming to an airport near you: The Massachusetts Air and Space Museum ๐Ÿง‘โ€โœˆ๏ธ

  • The water is safe to drink ๐Ÿšฐ

  • Upcoming events ๐Ÿ’ƒ ๐Ÿบ ๐ŸŽถ

Letโ€™s get to it.

THE DIGEST

The latest on the trash strike ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ โ™ป๏ธ

Weโ€™re 22 days into the strike, and there are no signs of resolution anytime soon. Below is the latest update from Mayor Cahill on July 22, and some additional insights from local reporting.

  • If your regular trash day is Tuesday, have your trash out before 7 AM this morning.

  • People with usual Wednesday trash pickup should not put their trash out today.

  • If your trash was missed yesterday, email [email protected], and heโ€™ll try to get it picked up today.

  • Republic is still not picking up recycling.

On Tuesday, officials from six North Shore and Greater Boston communities were in Salem Court to seek health violation citations and additional resources from Republic Services due to the 22-day-old sanitation workers' strike.

Federal Court Judge Brian Murphy denied Republic Services' motions for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction against the striking workers. Peabody Mayor Ted Bettencourt has not heard of any new negotiations scheduled between Republic and the Teamsters Union Local 25 as of late Tuesday afternoon.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has also urged Republic Services to resolve the work stoppage, highlighting the escalating public health concerns and the financial burden on residents, businesses, and municipalities.

Coming to an airport near you: The Massachusetts Air and Space Museum ๐Ÿง‘โ€โœˆ๏ธ

The Massachusetts Air and Space Museum (MASM), a nonprofit established in 2007, is relocating to Beverly Airport. Previously in Hyannis, the museum closed last September and has now secured a 20-year lease for a 3,000-square-foot building at the airport. They aim to open in February 2026.

MASM focuses on aviation and aerospace education, featuring exhibits like a Coast Guard plane cockpit, a GE jet engine, and displays on astronauts with Massachusetts ties. The museum plans to offer hands-on experiences, including flight simulators and air traffic control simulations, aiming to partner with North Shore Community College's aviation program and the Civil Air Patrol unit at the airport.

The water is safe to drink ๐Ÿšฐ

Residents of Beverly and Salem have recently reported an unusual taste and smell in their drinking water, prompting an investigation by the Salem and Beverly Water Supply Board. Alan Taubert, the board's executive director, explained that while the water remains safe to drink, the cause of the odor and taste issues has been perplexing. Despite daily internal testing not detecting issues, Taubert acknowledges several potential factors:

  • Environmental changes: Wenham Lake, the primary reservoir, is susceptible to "flipping" due to heat, causing water from the bottom to rise. Runoff from recent rains and fertilizer use, as well as algae blooms, can also impact water quality.

  • Treatment adjustments: The board believes they "got caught behind on the carbon" treatment, which they have now increased.

The water board has taken steps to address the problem, including increasing carbon in the treatment process, targeting specific algae blooms, and even dispatching a lab analyst to complainants' homes. They've posted an update advising residents to flush cold water lines. The newly treated water is gradually moving through the system.

What else is buzzing ๐Ÿ

  • ๐Ÿฅณ The Cabot Street Block Party is this Saturday, July 26, and includes live performances, drinks and food, and a VIP experience at the Pink Peppy Club.

  • ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿคโ€๐Ÿง‘ August 5th kicks off the 60th anniversary of Beverly Homecoming! Events include LobsterFest, the Beverly Homecoming Fireworks, the Beverly Beer Mile, a few concerts, and more!

  • ๐Ÿ ๏ธ Looking to buy a house? It might be your time. About 10 percent of pending home sales in Boston fell through in June, signaling a potential cooling in the housing market.

  • ๐Ÿ•๏ธ If not a house, how about a dog? The MPCA-Angell, Northeast Animal Shelter of Salem, is running "Droolatta" from July 21-27, offering fee-free adoptions for all dogs aged one and older.

  • ๐Ÿ€ We may be on the cusp of our first-ever NBA player from Beverly. Matt Cross, who grew up in Ryal Side, played for the Dallas Mavericks during the NBA Summer League and is trying to secure a spot on their roster.
