THE DIGEST

The latest on the trash strike ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ โ™ป๏ธ

What you need to know this morning: Regular Monday customers should put their mixed trash and recycling out before 7 AM. If you have a usual Friday pickup and your trash and recycling were missed yesterday, put them out before 7 AM. Maps of the remaining streets to pick up from the Friday routes can be found here. Email [email protected] if your street was missed, but itโ€™s not reflected in the maps.

You can put your recycling out with your trash this week. The stateโ€™s Department of Environmental Protection has approved a waiver for Beverlyโ€™s recycling to be disposed of as trash for the last two weeks due to the high percentages of contamination and public health concerns. Trash and recycling will be picked up together.

Or, you can drop off your recycling at the Standley St. compost site. You will need to deposit your recycling over the side of the dumpster. The site is open 9 AM โ€“ 3 PM through Saturday. Break down all cardboard and flatten as much plastic as possible.

The remaining schedule for this week: Regular Tuesday customers will have trash and recycling picked up on Thursday, Wednesday customers will be picked up on Friday, and Thursday customers will be picked up on Saturday.

What happens when you have Americaโ€™s hottest zip code? ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Paul Leighton of the Beverly Beat connected with Jason Brewer, a realtor from Gahanna, Ohio. Gahanna was named the hottest zip code in both 2023 and 2024, so Jason was a good person to ask. He shared that the biggest consequence is that people from major cities, who likely never heard of Gahanna before the report, started looking to buy real estate there. He also noted some growing pains, as the newfound popularity put stress on the public school system, leading to a new high school, which is scheduled to open next year. However, he expressed itโ€™s mostly a good thing. โ€œIt should be looked at as really great for jobs and prosperity, and growth for your community.โ€

An update on the drinking water from Salem and Beverly Water Supply Board๐Ÿšฐ

The Salem and Beverly Water Supply Board shared an update on August 25 about our drinking water, noting โ€œOur water system was recently found to have exceeded a drinking water standard, or maximum contaminant level (MCL), for a water disinfection byproduct (DBP).โ€ The Board noted that this is not an emergency, and an alternative source of water is not necessary.

Our system exceeded the standard for total Trihalomethanes (TTHM). Chlorine is added to our drinking water for disinfection, and these chemicals may react with organic matter in the water to form DBPs. โ€œFactors such as warmer temperatures and higher water age in the system can also increase these levels over time.โ€

The Board is addressing this by working with Salem and Beverly water departments to augment annual flushing programs to reduce the water age of the system. The Board is also updating certain key systems as part of an ongoing comprehensive capital construction project. These combined actions will help reduce the TTHM levels.

You are not required to boil your water or take other corrective actions at this time. If you have a severely compromised immune system, have an infant, are pregnant, or are elderly, you may be at increased risk and should seek advice from your health care providers about drinking this water.

What else is buzzing ๐Ÿ

  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ๏ธ Fundraising intricacies in the mayoral race: A state law prevents Brendan Sweeney, who is the assistant town manager of Boxford, from directly asking for political donations because he holds an appointed public position. This rule does not apply to Mayor Cahill, who is an elected official. (Note: This article is behind a paywall.)

  • ๐ŸŽฅ Bill Hanney, owner of North Shore Music Theatre, might be bringing Hollywood to Beverly by building a movie studio on his 26-acre property. The plan is in the concept phase, but Hanney believes the North Shore is an ideal location for a sound stage due to its popularity for outdoor filming.

  • ๐Ÿ• Northshore Magazine wrote about the best pizza you can find on the North Shore. Rev Kitchen & Bar and Soma were both included, in addition to plenty of other great spots.

  • ๐ŸฆŸ North Shore residents are urged to take precautions against mosquito bites after additional insects testing positive for West Nile Virus were found in the area. Here are tips on how to protect yourself.
