THE DIGEST

The Sinking Whole Foods Saga Continues πŸ›’

A U.S. District Court judge just denied a motion to dismiss from Jacobs Engineering Group, the lone holdout in a massive lawsuit over our local grocery store’s "differential settlement" issues. While seven other builders have agreed to play nice in a working group, Jacobs argued they weren't directly responsible for the five-inch concrete floor that’s currently sinking. Judge Indira Talwani disagreed, meaning the store β€” which remains open β€” will keep pushing for a permanent fix beyond the current remediation work. Expect more clarity soon, as the next official status report was due yesterday.

The Y Grows Its Footprint πŸ‘Ÿ

The YMCA of the North Shore is officially acquiring the Beverly Athletic Club, adding the 40,000-square-foot main facility on Reservoir Road and the Cummings Center express spot to its campus. Executive Director Tim Flaherty says the move provides much-needed relief for the packed Sterling Center parking lot, and the site will be renamed the Edwin J. Soul Center in honor of its founder. BAC members can now switch their memberships to the YMCA, with no payments beginning until June 1. The deal is expected to close in mid-May and members will be able to enjoy the amenities at both locations very soon.

High School Hockey: Pay to Play πŸ’

Superintendent Peter Cushing is proposing a hike in student athletic fees to help bridge a $2 million budget gap and preserve educator jobs. While most sports are looking at a modest 10% increase, ice hockey fees could leap from $315 to a staggering $1,000 per season due to ice rental costs that left him β€œflabbergasted and floored.” The proposal also includes higher tuition for full-year preschool and increased bus fees, all aimed at keeping the district’s core programs afloat. The Superintendent noted athletics cost the district about $900,000 last year, and fees have not increased across the board since 2013.

What else is buzzing 🐝

  • πŸ‡ The Easter Bunny will be at Northshore Mall for pictures through this Saturday. The pictures are free if you can hop out of the mall before security catches you.

  • ✈️ Beverly Regional Airport has been flagged as one of six Massachusetts "hot spots" by the FAA for runway collision risks, so keep an eye on the skies as federal authorities push for heightened pilot attention at our local tarmac.
