THE DIGEST
๐ Get Your Holiday Stroll On
Beverly Main Streets is bringing back the Downtown Holiday Stroll (formerly the Winter Market) this Friday and Saturday from 4-8 pm. Youโll find a full event catalog on their website which details the shopping passport youโll use to obtain stamps from downtown businesses, some of the treats you can look forward to (like free cookies at A&B and Beverly Credit Union), and a full listing of participating shops and pop-up vendor markets. The annual lighting of the Memory Tree in Odell Park will take place on Saturday at 4:30 pm. Also, the city is offering free parking from December 11-25.

๐ฆ Beverly Secures Grant for Harbor Debris Removal
The city of Beverly has received a $124,700 grant to initiate the removal of "derelict" lobster traps and abandoned fishing gear from Beverly Harbor. The project, led by Harbormaster Peter Dickman and Assistant Harbormaster David Caldwell, is scheduled to begin next winter using SCUBA divers for retrieval. This effort addresses the environmental issue of "ghost fishing" and reduces debris interference for marine life and boaters. Beverly is set to be the first Massachusetts city to undertake a harbor cleanup project. Work like this was never previously allowed as โabandoned gear was treated as private property even when it was unclaimed and no owner could be identified.โ
๐๏ธ Beverly Approves Max Tax Shift to Businesses
The Beverly City Council approved the maximum 1.75:1 tax shift toward commercial properties this week, continuing a five-year trend. Despite this shift, the average single-family homeowner will see a $406.80 tax hike, a 4.3% increase. Despite lower tax rates, rising home values mean homeowners will still receive a higher tax bill.
What else is buzzing ๐
๐งธ The 29th annual Officer Sean R. Connolly Memorial Toy Drive invites residents to donate new, unwrapped toys for Beverly children in need. Beverly police will be collecting donations at the North Beverly Plaza on December 14 from 9 am to 1 pm.
๐๏ธ Beverly's aggregate electricity program secured a new 22-month contract with First Power Point, starting in January, offering "near-level prices" and 100 percent renewable energy for the standard option. Mayor Cahill noted the program already saved residents $2.3 million and reduced emissions.
๐๏ธ The MSPCA-Angell is hosting "Snow Place Like Home," offering waived adoption fees for dogs 1 year or older at multiple shelters statewide. The event runs from Monday through December 14 to find homes for over 100 dogs before the holidays.

PET OF THE WEEK

Meet Tweety Bird! This little lady is full of love, and she shows it most adorably: with excited, happy little whines whenever she greets you. It's her way of saying, "I'm so glad you're here!" Though Tweety Bird adores people, she hasn't been too fond of the other dogs she's met here at the shelter, so she'd do best as your only love, where she can enjoy a peaceful environment and all the affection she's been waiting for. If you're looking for a loyal little friend who will brighten your days with her sweet greetings and gentle heart, Tweety Bird may be the one. Learn more and apply for adoption here.
