🐝 Winner, winner, chicken dinner

Hannah Bowen wins the special election, we have big commencement plans for local colleges, some city funding updates you should know, and plenty of great events.

Good morning, Beverly. These past few days have been some of the best weather in recent memory. I hope you’ve all been able to get outside and enjoy it.

In today’s Beverly Buzz:

  • Hannah Bowen is our new state representative 🏙️

  • Commencement plans for Montserrat and Endicott 🎓️

  • City finance news 💰️

  • Upcoming events 💃 🎤 🎵

Let’s get to it.

THE DIGEST

Hannah Bowen is our new state representative 🏙️

Beverly City Councilor Hannah Bowen won the special election for the 6th Essex District State House seat, defeating Republican Medley Long. Bowen, who previously beat fellow Councilor Todd Rotondo in the primary, will replace former State Representative Jerry Parisella. We all win with this election, because candidates can now stop calling us and knocking on our doors!

Hannah’s priorities include:

  • Making it easier for our residents to find affordable housing.

  • Continual support for our seniors and veterans, ensuring they keep their homes, and stopping cuts to in-home personal care attendants.

  • Education and economic development.

  • Reducing traffic by expanding public transportation and making neighborhoods more walkable, prioritizing funding for pothole repair, sidewalk improvement, and bridge upgrades.

Congratulations to the Class of 2025! 🎓️

Montserrat College of Art is celebrating its graduating Class of 2025 this Friday, May 16th, at 10 AM at The Cabot! “The class will be part of a procession of trustees, faculty, staff, and honored guests, led by bagpipers of Creagan More Pipes and Drums as they march from the Hardie Building to the theater.”

Endicott College is celebrating its graduating class during its 85th Commencement on Sunday, May 17, 2025. The commencement speaker is Ambassador “Sully” Sullenberger, pilot of the “Miracle on the Hudson.”

City finances 💰️

Beverly was awarded $250,000 in supplemental school and transportation funding as part of the state senate budget plan. Beverly’s funds are assigned to construction costs for the Brimbal Avenue/Dunham Road/Route 128 Interchange Roundabout.

However, Beverly missed out on earmarked funding in the recently passed state budget proposal by the House. “The main reason that Beverly missed out in the House this year is because the city currently has no state representative.” Hannah Bowen will hopefully ensure we don’t miss our seat at the table moving forward!

What else is buzzing 🐝

  • 🪖 Beverly Warrior Weekend takes place at Beverly High School this Saturday and Sunday. It’s a free, two-day military appreciation and services festival with events like a military helicopter landing, K-9 demonstrations, a virtual skydive, Rainforest Reptiles, food vendors, and more.

  • ✍️ Calling all rising writers and reporters! Endicott College is hosting its 7th annual Young Writers Workshop from June 25-27. High school students entering grades 8-12 in Fall ‘25 can register for the Young Writers Workshop or the Young Journalists Workshop. Each course costs $400, and the application deadline is tomorrow.

  • 📱 Ed Sheeran’s “Old Phone” music video was released last week. You may want to check it out if you know anyone who attended in Ipswich.

  • 🎻 Nine Beverly students are performing at the Northeast Massachusetts Youth Orchestras’ free spring concerts at the Dolan Performing Arts Center in Ipswich this Sunday.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

📸 Digital Archives of the Beverly Library

This weekend at the Mom Crawl, I wondered how much of Mother’s Day has remained the same over time. I searched the Beverly Public Library site for “Mother’s Day” and found this page from The Beverly Evening Times, an edition published on Friday, May 11, 1934. My favorite part is the title, “Remember MOTHER, She Remembers You.” My mom said the same thing to me last week.
