Good morning, Beverly. More than 20,000 people lost power last week across Massachusetts due to the wind. We saw 55 mph winds in Beverly and now a chunk of my fence is lying on the ground. If anyone wants to fix it I can pay you in eggs or IOUs.

THE DIGEST

The Whole Foods on Brimbal Avenue is on thin ice 🥑 🧊 

The Whole Foods on Brimbal Avenue, built on a former landfill, is structurally unsound. Whole Foods is suing CEA Beverly LLC, the building owner, and two other subcontractors who worked on the building. The store is sinking into the ground due to negligent construction per the lawsuit, which is in federal court. Additionally, Whole Foods noted in the suit that floors and walls are cracking, and windows have spontaneously shattered due to the movement of the building.

Massachusetts rejected a proposal to build a road through the land over a decade ago due to concerns about its stability, yet permitted the construction of the building that houses Whole Foods. Whole Foods alleges millions in repair costs and lost profits, citing "faulty workmanship" and improper design.

On Monday, March 10th, the city’s official Facebook page posted that “the owners’ engineers submitted letters to the City stating that the building is safe for public occupancy.” Mayor Cahill shared this post from his official Facebook page as well.

100 free Pilates private sessions this year 🧘 💦 

Last week Angela Marciano McCarthy of Not Strictly Pilates reached out to me to share that she’s gifting 100 Pilates private sessions this year. At first, I thought maybe she heard I had previously fallen for the Nigerian prince email scam to the tune of $3,500 and wanted in on the action. But after further review, I found it to be a real, extremely thoughtful offer.

Angela is a physical therapist, Pilates teacher, and Reiki Master. She wants to share Pilates with as many people as possible. “It’s really about giving more people the opportunity to experience the benefits of Pilates so they can decide if it's a good fit for them at this time,” Angela noted in our email exchange.

I signed up for a session and it took less than a minute. I recommend you do the same!

The Frame at 198 is coming up at Beverly Bootstraps 🎨 🖼️ 

The Frame at 198 is Beverly Bootstraps Thrift Shop's semi-annual art showcase featuring local artists. The April 2025 showcase theme is community.

“Our goal is to create an inviting space where artists can exhibit their work, share their stories, and engage with other artists while also supporting the important work that we do at Beverly Bootstraps. At The Frame at 198, we aim to not only celebrate creativity but also encourage collaboration, connection, and community.”

Submissions are open and must be in by 3/21. Artists must be 18 or older and the art must be family-friendly. You can find more information here.

What else is buzzing 🐝 

• A total lunar eclipse will appear overnight March 13-14. It will be a “blood” moon — meaning the lunar surface is expected to have a reddish hue for an hour. Forecasts show mostly cloudy skies. 🌒

• Governor Maura Healey's "Energy Affordability Agenda" will provide a one-time, $50 electricity bill credit to customers of Eversource, National Grid, & Unitil this April, addressing high costs experienced during the winter months. 💰️ ⚡️

• Gloria Food Store is up for sale. The Beverly location opened in 1936 and was purchased by the Ofiesh family in 1983. Some buyers are interested in continuing to run the business as Gloria Food. 🥪 

• Dispensaries in Beverly are no longer required to pay “impact fees” per the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission. The city returned $81,134.77 to Panacea Wellness in February 2024. 💵

Meet Clarita! She’s a 5-month-old Retriever/Labrador mix and she just got here from Puerto Rico after a few months of drinks on the beach. She initially comes off as a little shy as she’s still learning to trust people. She’s been meeting new canine friends at CAAA to help build her confidence.
