THE DIGEST

Whole Foods is โ€œquite literally, sinking into the earthโ€ ๐Ÿฅ‘

While we generally worry about grocery store prices going up, we may need to worry more about the stores themselves going down. Whole Foods Market on Brimbal Avenue continues to sink into the ground, leading to appliances breaking, windows fracturing, displays slanting, and noting in their recent court filings, โ€œAnd all of these issues will continue to worsen until the underlying defect is resolved.โ€

In March, when the story first broke, the city hired a structural engineer to inspect the store, and the engineer stated the building was safe for public occupancy. Paul Leighton at The Beverly Beat contacted Mayor Cahill to ask if thatโ€™s still the case six months later, but had not heard back yet as of September 4. There are signs up in the store that say, โ€œWeโ€™re looking forward to sharing a new store with you soon.โ€

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

The latest on the trash strike ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ โ™ป๏ธ

What you need to know this morning: Regular Monday customers should put their trash out before 7 AM. Regular Friday customers who have not yet had their trash picked up should put their trash and recycling out before 7 AM.

The end of mixed trash and recycling pickup. Once Republic successfully picks up all remaining Friday routes today, that will signal the end of recycling being collected as trash. Moving forward, all customers should keep their recycling separate from their trash. Republic will not be picking up any more recycling until further notice.

A fire at the Standley Street Yard Waste Compost site resulted in the site closing early yesterday. Check the city website this morning to determine whether the site is open again.

What weโ€™re hearing from local reporting: The Teamsters Local 25 union rejected the latest contract offer from Republic Services last week. 84% of the 400 union members voted against the offer. 14 communities across the North Shore continue to experience delays in trash pickup, with little to no recycling pickup in towns like ours. Teamsters Local 25 President Tom Mari stated, โ€œWe are ready to meet and make the deal, so we can go back to work."

Updates on our city theaters ๐ŸŽญ๏ธ

The Cabot reopens on September 15! The theater temporarily shut its doors on June 15 for renovation. Weโ€™ve included some upcoming events in this edition.

The Larcom Theatre began putting up a new marquee last week, the first sign on the building since the 1970s. The new sign is a near replica of the marquee the theater had in 1912. ICYMI: You can own a piece of history from the theatre by purchasing an original 1912 chair. โ€œThese chairsโ€”reupholstered in the 1980sโ€”have seen it all: presidential visits, a long-running magic show, and even a stint as an XXX cinema. Truly, they are seats with stories.โ€

What else is buzzing ๐Ÿ

  • ๐Ÿˆ The Beverly varsity football team lost to Gloucester last Friday by a score of 14-7. They look to rebound this Saturday against Haverhill.

  • ๐Ÿ“† Welcome to 16 days of free events across the North Shore. Trails & Sails kicks off on September 13 with hundreds of unique experiences, including guided hikes and paddles, behind-the-scenes tours, historic reenactments, interactive exhibits, artisan demonstrations, community celebrations, and much more.

  • ๐Ÿท Need a drink? Northshore Magazine wrote about four North Shore wineries you can check out this fall. Mill River Winery, Marble Ridge Winery, 1634 Meadery, and Willow Spring Vineyards.

  • ๐Ÿ‘ผ RIP Tom Gifford, the architect of Beverly Bootstraps. Reading this article about him is a reminder of his incredible impact on our town and countless people.

PET OF THE WEEK

๐Ÿ“ธ Cape Ann Animal Aid

Meet Alpaca! He's a lovable goofball who lives for zoomies, scratches, morning tippy-tappy greetings, and snuggling. Housebroken since day one, Paca's a pro at indoor manners. He also makes a great car ride buddy, as he doesn't get car sick and has taken many road trips in his life. He can be a little nervous around small children, but does great with older kids and would easily fit right in with a big family and some outdoor adventures. Smart as a whip, he's got a whole trick list: sit, stay, down, paw, 360, "be sneaky" (crawl), "do yoga" (downward dog), and "security," where he sits between your legs like a bodyguard!
