THE DIGEST
Beverly Removes Four Stop Signs π
Beverly police have permanently removed four stop signs at two key intersections to help traffic flow better following the recent installation of new traffic lights. At the Kernwood Avenue and Harris Street intersection, both stop signs on Kernwood Avenue were taken down while the Harris Street signs remain in place. This change was made to work with the new traffic lights at Bridge/Kernwood Avenue, which are now active.
The second location involves a four-way stop at River/Federal and McPherson Drive, where two signs were removed β one at River Street and Federal Streets near Salem Plumbing, and another at McPherson Drive and Federal Street. Police say this adjustment is necessary to accommodate new lights being installed at River and Bridge Streets, which will soon be active.
Beverly's New Youth Center Set to Double in Size π’
Nearly five decades after Beverly first opened a youth center in 1975, the city is preparing to unveil a dramatically expanded facility along the Bass River. The new McPherson Youth Center is twice the size of the old building, which was demolished earlier this year to make way for the $6 million project funded through the American Rescue Plan Act and a HUD community grant. The facility serves kids ages 11 to 18 for free. While construction continues, the center operates from a temporary Park Street location. The expanded center will feature a full gym, game rooms, arts and crafts space, kitchen, plus the existing outdoor basketball court and skate park when it opens in February.
Kelly Family Sells Beverly Ford Dealership π
The familiar Kelly name has disappeared from Beverly's automotive landscape after six decades of selling cars in the city. The Kelly Ford dealership at 420 Cabot Street is now McGovern Ford, marking the end of an era that began when Roland Kelly opened his first dealership on Rantoul Street in 1965. Brian Kelly, Roland's son who expanded the family business into a North Shore auto empire, decided to sell the Beverly location last month to focus on his remaining dealerships on Route 1 and 114. Most of the 50 employees at the Beverly location were retained by the new owners, and Kelly still maintains a warehouse off Sohier Road where he stores classic cars and memorabilia from the family's automotive history.
