🐝 School's out for summer

City Hall is searching for a temporary home for planned renovations, a community church is closing, some updates on the Northshore Mall, and plenty of great events to look forward to.

Good morning, Beverly. Today is National Leon Day, which means we’re halfway to Christmas. And for an early holiday gift, the temperature is expected to drop from the high of 102Β° in Beverly yesterday into the 70s this Thursday through Sunday.

In today’s Beverly Buzz:

  • Dollar Store Too Pricey for City Hall's Temporary Digs πŸ™οΈ

  • Beverly's Second Congregational Church to Close β›ͺ️

Let’s get to it.

THE DIGEST

Dollar Store Too Pricey for City Hall's Temporary Digs πŸ™οΈ

The city's plan to temporarily move City Hall into the former Dollar Store on Cabot Street has been scrapped due to the prohibitive cost of nearly $2 million to make it suitable. This move was intended to house City Hall services for 1.5 to 2 years while the historic 1783 City Hall building undergoes an estimated $27 million renovation, its first major improvements since 1939.

The city acquired the Dollar Store building in 2023 with plans to sell the building for housing and retail. Now, the city will issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) to find an alternative temporary location, preferably downtown, but potentially further out in an industrial area if necessary. The City Hall renovations will include demolishing the old police station annex and building a new one to accommodate additional departments, installing HVAC, adding restrooms and meeting rooms, and improving accessibility and record storage. The city anticipates about $1 million in relocation costs.

Beverly's Second Congregational Church to Close β›ͺ️

Beverly's Second Congregational Church, established in 1713 and one of the city's oldest institutions, is closing due to declining membership. Its property at 35 Conant St. will be transferred to Lifebridge North Shore, a nonprofit supporting vulnerable individuals. Lifebridge plans to utilize the site as a drop-in resource center, not a homeless shelter, and will continue to host existing community groups like the Boy Scouts. Rev. Adam Isbitsky expressed the congregation's grief but noted their satisfaction that the historic building will remain a community asset. A community town hall is scheduled for Monday, June 30, at 6 PM to discuss the transition.

Northshore Mall Updates πŸ›’

For families with young kiddos: Celebrate the grand opening of the newly designed and reimaged play area today from 10 AM - 12 PM! Join in for face painting, balloon twisting, sing-alongs, and more. The Play Area is near Macy's.

Two new stores are opening soon: Pizzerino, which sells, you guessed it, pizzas! And Sally Beauty, a beauty supplies company with more than 5,000 products for hair, nail, and skin care.

What else is buzzing 🐝

  • πŸŽ’ School’s out for summer, and Mayor Cahill has asked that we stay alert at the wheel as kids in the community will be β€œout and about on their bikes and skateboards, and walking and enjoying all that summer vacation brings.”

  • πŸ₯ͺ Gloria Food Store shared on Instagram that the sale of their building was extended six weeks, so they will remain open for the β€œtime being.”

  • 🌊 St. Peter’s Fiesta begins in Gloucester today and runs through 6/29. Fiesta includes one of my favorite events on the North Shore, the greasy pole.

  • πŸŽ† Northshore Magazine shared a great resource to help find fireworks and festivals across the North Shore as we approach July.

  • 🚨 An 11-year-old girl from Salem is missing. If you have any information, please contact the Salem police at 978-744-1212.
