IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BEVERLY CREDIT UNION
Beverlyβs only hometown financial institution
Historically, Beverly's banks proudly established their headquarters here. Over time, however, those hometown banks were sold off to the highest bidders, and their headquarters moved out of town. Beverly Credit Union is different. As Beverly's only remaining hometown financial institution, this not-for-profit cooperative is member-owned, guaranteeing its operations will stay right here.

THE DIGEST
Forever chemicals discovered at Beverly Airport βοΈ
A mock plane crash training exercise at Beverly Airport in 2009, which used firefighting foam containing PFAS, a known "forever chemical," is now causing contamination issues. A recent report confirmed that PFAS levels in the airport's groundwater are above state standards. Some of the contamination was found within the cityβs Water Supply Protection Overlay District, an area meant to protect our drinking water.
An environmental lawyer noted that the contamination is so high in one area that a finding of "no significant risk" could not be made. The airport has already spent over $247,000 on the investigation and will need to invest more into the cleanup. Mayor Cahill said the airport commission, which oversees the city-owned airport, is considering its next steps.
Beverly Teachers Association (BTA) unit splits βοΈ
The BTA has experienced a split with its smallest bargaining group, Unit B, which represents 19 administrators and academic directors. The story, uncovered via a public records request to the Massachusetts Department of Labor Relations (DLR), revealed Unit B's formal petition to decertify and form its own union. Paul Leighton, the brilliant reporter behind The Beverly Beat, was able to obtain an official BTA memorandum noting the split was mutual. The School Committee has consented to the change and is now negotiating separately with the BTA and the newly formed administrators' union to finalize the contracts that were agreed upon to end the strike.

PET OF THE WEEK

Meet Rory! Heβs three months old, happy, wiggly, and full of classic puppy energy-playing, exploring, and learning about the world. Look at this dog, heβs absolutely adorable. Rory can often be found snuggling and snoozing away with his three siblings after playtime, usually in a pile (so cute)! If you've been thinking about adding a furry friend to your life, now's your chance. Heβs ready to bring joy, love, and a little bit of mischief into his new home. Learn more and apply for adoption here. Also, there are some specialty breed dogs up for adoption at the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem.
