๐Ÿ Going once, going twice, sold!

Sale of a local church approved, a unanimous vote to delay construction on a historical property, and plenty of awesome events.

Good morning, Beverly. On Sunday, the New England Patriots won their first playoff game since February 3, 2019. That streak of almost six years is the longest they have gone since an 11-year playoff drought between 1985-1996. Long story short: life has been good for Pats fans for the last 30 years.

In todayโ€™s Beverly Buzz:

  • Church Sale Officially Approved โ›ช๏ธ

  • Unanimous Vote to Delay Demolition on Historical Building ๐Ÿš๏ธ

  • Mic Check on Cabot Street ๐ŸŽค

  • Upcoming events ๐Ÿ’ƒ ๐Ÿบ ๐ŸŽถ ๐ŸŽฅ ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿณ ๐ŸŽค

Letโ€™s get to it.

THE DIGEST

Church Sale Officially Approved โ›ช๏ธ

The state has officially blessed the $2.1M sale of Beverlyโ€™s historic Second Congregational Church to Lifebridge North Shore, paving the way for a new daytime resource center. While the property is valued at over $2.1M, Lifebridge will only pay $250,000 thanks to a massive "gift of equity" from the church to cover the significant costs of building repairs and reconstruction. Attorney General Andrea Campbellโ€™s office is requiring Lifebridge to maintain the sanctuary for current members and provide space for local nonprofits. The historic church is finally closing its doors after over three centuries due to a membership that had dwindled to just a few dozen active congregants.

Unanimous Vote to Delay Demolition on Historical Building ๐Ÿš๏ธ

Beverlyโ€™s Historic Districts Commission just issued a one-year, unanimous vote to delay demolition for a First Period house on 38 Standley St. The house has been vacant for roughly 10 years, and the Waring School seeks to sell the land for a potential four-house development, citing preservation costs that have become fiscally prohibitive. While the school cites high preservation costs, local advocates are fighting to save this "irreplaceable" piece of our landscape before the clock runs out. This 1700s gem was once home to World Wildlife Fund founding director Harold Jefferson Coolidge, who also served in World War II and supervised Julia Child.

Mic Check on Cabot Street ๐ŸŽค

Local politics are getting a comedic facelift now that Keith Sonia and John Taylor have joined the City Council and School Committee, respectively. The duo sharpened their wits in the same "Couch to Mic" comedy class at Off Cabot before winning their seats last fall. Expect a few more punchlines than usual at the next School Committee meeting on January 14 and the City Council meeting on January 20.

What else is buzzing ๐Ÿ

  • ๐Ÿคผ Our Beverly wrestlers are headed into enemy territory tonight to take on Gloucester. The action kicks off at 7 PM sharp.

  • ๐Ÿš† Using the commuter rail this weekend? Note that on January 17-18, local and express shuttle buses will replace regular weekend train service on the Newburyport/Rockport Line between North Station and Swampscott to allow for signal improvement work.

  • ๐Ÿฅž All Beverly residents are invited to attend a free community breakfast on January 19 at Beverly Middle School to celebrate the 40th anniversary of honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.โ€™s legacy.

  • ๐Ÿ›’ Market Basket was ranked the second best grocery store in the country by customer data science company Dunnhumby. Which makes it clear that nobody from Dunnhumby has tried shopping at Market Basket on a Sunday morning.
