π Get ready for spring (but keep the shovels nearby)

THE DIGEST
Staying On The Beat π
Mayor Cahill and the City Council are fast-tracking a "home-rule petition" to bypass the stateβs mandatory retirement age of 65 for Police Chief John LeLacheur, who turns 65 in May 2027. The petition was approved by Beverly City Council, and now the request must be approved by the state Legislature and the governor.
LeLacheur was hired in 2013 after retiring as a New Hampshire state police captain, where he was awarded the New Hampshire State Police medal of valor in 1999. He called Beverly βone of the safest cities in the Commonwealth if not the nation.β If the state approves the petition, LeLacheur could continue serving the City of Beverly until he reaches age 70.

A fast-moving fire broke out on Hale Park Avenue on Sunday, displacing a family of four and tragically resulting in the loss of their family dog. You can support the Barr family by making a donation here. Community donations will help the family with temporary housing and rent support, clothing, furniture, and essentials lost in the fire, and emotional support resources as they recover.
Recent City Grants β
Beverlyβs waterfront and local youth programs are officially leveling up thanks to a fresh influx of state funding. A $550,000 state grant will fund the reconstruction of Glover Wharfβs commercial hoist and fishing pier over the next three months β just in time for your summer strolls by the water. On land, Express Yourself and YMCA North Shore each snagged $26,550 in YouthReach funding to keep their transformative arts and science programs running strong. These grants βaim to help youth acquire social, emotional, and academic skills.β
