Ever heard of revenge saving?
Born as the opposite of revenge spending โ when people splurged during the pandemic after months of lockdown โ revenge saving describes todayโs trend of aggressively setting aside money to regain control and protect yourself from rising prices and economic uncertainty.
How can you revenge save? Start small. Set aside a little amount of money each week or month. Direct a portion of your paycheck to a different account or start an automatic debit from your checking account, almost like you are paying a bill, but you are paying yourself! Once you learn to live without that money, try increasing the amount. A great strategy is to open a savings or money market account somewhere you donโt already bank โ it makes it less tempting to dip into those funds.
And the perfect place to do that is Beverly Credit Union. You can open an account with as little as $5.00. There are no monthly account fees, and you can do everything online! Enjoy knowing the security that your hard-earned money is federally insured by NCUA to the maximum allowed by law, your funds are in a safe and strong local financial institution โ rather than some online bank youโve never heard of, and when you really need to get to the money โ you know where it is โ right here in Beverly where we have been serving our members since 1952!
THE DIGEST
Events to prepare you for the upcoming election ๐
The Beverly Municipal Election is on November 4, less than three weeks away, and there are some upcoming opportunities to familiarize yourselves with the candidates running for office. This is the first election that will result in a four-year term for mayor.
The first is the Beverly Candidate Forum at The Hastings House tomorrow at 7 PM. You will hear from candidates running for mayor, councilors at-large, school committee members at-large, and Ward 6 candidates. The event is free.
The second is the Mayoral Candidate Forum & Breakfast at A&B Burger this Friday at 8:30 AM. The event is $25/person and will include coffee, tea, and light pastries.
The latest on the Hall-Whitaker Bridge ๐
The Hall-Whitaker Bridge, closed since June 2022, is on track for a temporary replacement opening on July 27, 2027. The project team aims to beat that date, with construction kicking off this fall. Work will begin in the water as early as next month, with the actual bridge installed in pieces over four months between December 2026 and March 2027. This is part of a larger project, which will deliver two permanent bridges (Hall-Whitaker and Kernwood) by 2032. Pedestrian and bicycle access to the current Hall-Whitaker Bridge will remain viable throughout construction.
What else is buzzing ๐
๐๏ธ Trash pickup is delayed one day due to Columbus Day. Leaf pickup will occur on our respective trash days, and appliance/TV pickup will occur this Saturday.
๐ The Beverly Public Library is hosting a literary pumpkin contest where you can create a pumpkin with a literary connection โ whether itโs a character, book cover, scene, or author. Drop it off at the Reference Desk of the main library between October 16-19 for a chance to win a Copper Dog Books gift card!
๐ป Black Cat Tours in Salem landed at No. 5 on the list of best ghost tours in the country.
๐ฒ๏ธ [Reminder] There are no bikes allowed on Newburyport/Rockport Line trains during weekends in October.
๐ฐ๏ธ Beverly received a $143,500 grant from the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health to continue the Northeast Essex County Training and Technical Assistance Center, a program that trains police officers to respond safely and effectively to behavioral health crises across our region.
PET OF THE WEEK

Hi there, I'm Betsy, a 6-month-old Lab Mix, and I already know we're going to be best friends! Everyone here at the shelter says I'm downright adorable, and I've got the playful energy to match. I love running around the yard, chasing toys, and soaking up all the attention I can get. I'm still working on my manners, so if I get a little jumpy when we first meet, just know it's because I'm so excited to see you. If you're looking for a fun-loving, affectionate companion who will keep you on your toes and snuggle up with you after playtime, Iโm your girl. Learn more and apply for adoption here.
