๐ Back to school, back to school
School starts next week, updates on the trash strike, the opportunity to own a piece of Beverly history, and plenty of awesome events.

Good morning, Beverly. The Powerball is still up for grabs, with an estimated jackpot of $815 million. If I stop sending this newsletter next week, itโs either because 1) I won and disappeared to a remote island, or 2) my wife got sick of my jokes and sent me to a remote island.
In todayโs Beverly Buzz:

The superintendentโs update can be found here. Speaking of which, letโs meet the new superintendent. Dr. Peter Cushing was named superintendent on April 17 and officially began the job on July 1, following the retirement of Dr. Suzanne Charochak. Dr. Cushing comes from the Medford Public School District, where he has been the Assistant Superintendent of Enrichment and Innovation since 2019. You can read an interview with Cushing here, where he discusses topics such as his impressions of the security and cleanliness of Beverly schools, current staffing levels and open needs, his initial goals, the aftermath of the strike, and more.

The latest on the trash strike ๐๏ธ โป๏ธ
What you need to know this morning: Trash is delayed one day this week, and Mayor Cahill noted yesterday that we should expect Republic to have trouble keeping up all week. If you have a usual Tuesday pickup or a usual Monday pickup that was missed, put your trash out before 7 AM this morning. Email [email protected] if your street is missed today.
Put your recycling out with your trash this week and next. The stateโs Department of Environmental Protection has approved a waiver for Beverlyโs recycling to be disposed of as trash this week and next due to the high percentages of contamination and public health concerns. Trash and recycling will be picked up together.
You can drop off your recycling at the Standley St. compost site. You will need to deposit your recycling over the side of the dumpster. The site is open 9 AM โ 3 PM through Saturday.
On alternative options to Republic Services, Mayor Cahill noted on August 21 that some residents have asked if the city can contract another waste and recycling hauler to step in. He has reached out to other companies, but was told either 1) they would not cross the picket line, or 2) it would take months to staff and train teams to accommodate Beverly.
In local reporting, Teamsters Local 25 President Tom Mari shared that Republic Services told the union that the company would only return to the bargaining table if it withdrew its demand for Teamster health insurance in advance of talks.
What else is buzzing ๐
๐ช The Larcom Theatre is offering a limited number of its original 1912 theatre chairs for sale. Proceeds from sales will help restore the theatre.
๐ The 41st Gloucester Schooner Festival takes place 8/27 - 8/31. There are plenty of great events for the entire family, like public sails, deck tours, an obstacle course, and more!
๐ Stop & Shop is rolling out lower prices at all 88 of its stores across eastern Massachusetts. Yellow tags identify the new prices, with cost savings applied to thousands of items, like pasta and rotisserie chicken.
๐๏ธ Essex Tech is adding 104 seats to its cafeteria to meet the needs of its growing student body. The updates will feature a new patio to be constructed by students from the Landscaping and Turf Management program.
๐ซ The JCC of the North Shore is launching an extension of its Early Childhood Program at Beverlyโs Temple Bโnai Abraham in September. The program will open with two classrooms this fall: a room for children 15 months - 2 years, 9 months; and a room for children up to age 5. Families and children of all faiths are welcome to the new program. Limited spots are available!

Meet Bruno! This handsome Lab mix is seven years old, incredibly gentle, and kind. He gets along wonderfully with other dogs and would thrive in a home with a calm, confident canine friend. Bruno can be nervous with new situations and sudden changes, so CAAA recommends a quieter home without young children. He's loyal, sensitive, and would love nothing more than to be someone's shadow - the kind of dog who just wants to be near his person. If you're looking for a steady, loving companion who's already past the puppy chaos but still has so much love to give, this handsome guy might be your perfect match.
