π Arts Fest kicks off tomorrow!
We review the cliff notes of the proposed FY26 city operating budget, share some updates for food and drinks in our area, and talk about our not-so-quiet friends emerging from the ground this summer.

Good morning, Beverly. There are only three guarantees in life: death, taxes, and rain in Massachusetts on Saturdays. Call out of work today or tomorrow to enjoy the weather before the Saturday rain hits.

THE DIGEST
Proposed Fiscal Year 2026 City of Beverly Operating Budget π°οΈ
Mayor Cahill presented his proposed Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 budget last Monday at a City Council meeting. City officials are reviewing the budget, and the next City Council meeting on this topic is on June 16. Below are some of the highlights from Cahillβs proposal:
The FY 2026 proposed operating budget requests a total increase in spending of $7.762 million over the FY 2025 approved budget.
With this proposed budget, Beverly will return to the levy limit for property taxes. Beverly has been at the levy limit most years since Proposition 2 Β½ became law in the early 1980s, but weβve been below the limit since 2022. Here is more information on Proposition 2 Β½ for those unfamiliar with it.
A 9.1% increase in school funding (totaling a $12.7 million increase over two years), aiming to add 55 school staff compared to the 2019-2020 school year.
Cahill proposes using $3 million in "free cash" (aka cash reserves) for road and sidewalk repairs, which, combined with state and National Grid funds, will allocate over $8 million to these projects.
The proposed budget also includes provisions for borrowing to fund the estimated $25 million City Hall renovation. Cahill noted City Hallβs last significant renovation took place in the 1930s.
Waitress is now playing at North Shore Music Theatre through June 15 ποΈ
The North Shore Music Theatre is opening its 70th Anniversary season with the hit Broadway musical Waitress, running from through June 15th. Composed by award-winning singer and songwriter Sara Bareilles, the show tells the story of Jenna, a pie-making expert navigating a difficult marriage and unexpected pregnancy while pursuing her dream of owning a pie shop. The production, featuring Broadway stars Christine Dwyer and Matt DeAngelis, promises a full Broadway experience with a powerful story, humor, and a memorable soundtrack. Tickets start at $75.

Phantom Gourmet was filming at Super Sub Shop on May 27. Hopefully, weβll see the results on their website soon! (Hat tip to Stephen DiCillo π©.)
Beer drinkers unite. Through August 31, Cisco Brewers announced they're hiding special white Shark Tracker cans in the brewery's Shark Tracker Light Lager 12-packs across New England this summer. If you find one, you can win $500 worth of OCEARCH merch and $1,500 towards your favorite activity on the water.

The Beverly Fire Department rescued a cat from a tree on Monday on Lakeshore Ave! The only downside? It took me forever to get that cat up there.
