Good morning, Beverly. The Patriots won the first game of the Mike Vrabel era on Sunday. He only needs about 276 more to catch up to Belichick.

In today’s Beverly Buzz:

  • Beverly qualifies as a “mini-entitlement” community 🏘️

  • Beverly Bootstraps has a new executive director 🏢

  • The latest on the trash strike 🗑️ ♻️

  • Upcoming events 💃 🍺 🎶

Let’s get to it.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BEVERLY CREDIT UNION

Become an owner, not just a customer

Beverly Credit Union is available to all residents of Beverly.

Credit unions are different than banks. While they offer the same products as a bank does, when you have an account there, you are not a customer – you’re a member of a not-for-profit institution! All the profit a credit union makes goes back to you in the form of lower fees, higher dividends on savings, and lower loan rates. Right now, Beverly Credit Union is offering share certificate rates as high as 4.21% APY, and their More Money Market Account is paying up to 3.75%. You’ll also have peace of mind knowing the account is insured to the maximum amount allowed by the federal government.

Why make more money for bank stockholders when you can make more money for yourself? Learn how Beverly Credit Union can save you money today. You can open an account online, visit them downtown at 139 Cabot Street, or give ‘em a ring at 978-922-5254.

THE DIGEST

Beverly qualifies as a “mini-entitlement” community 🏘️

Beverly has been designated a "mini-entitlement" community, making it eligible for a significant amount of federal grant money. This status, granted under the Community Development Block Grant Program, means the city will be eligible for a minimum of $850,000 annually to help low- and moderate-income residents.

To qualify, a community must have:

  • A population of over 12,000. We have a population of 42,670 as of 2020.

  • At least 40% low- and moderate-income residents.

  • A poverty rate higher than the state average of 9.7%. Beverly is at 9.9%.

While some may find it surprising that a city with the "hottest zip code" in the country qualifies, Mayor Cahill noted that it highlights the wealth gap, acknowledging that despite a strong real estate market, there are still many residents in need of economic assistance. Beverly will retain the mini-entitlement designation for at least three years before the state recalculates its municipalities for eligibility. The most common activities funded by the program include housing rehabilitation, infrastructure, business assistance, public social services, and downtown revitalization.

Beverly Bootstraps has a new executive director 🏢

Allison Caffrey has been named the new executive director of Beverly Bootstraps. Caffrey, a lifelong Andover resident, has almost 20 years of nonprofit leadership experience, most recently as the executive director of Root in Salem. Caffrey stated she was "honored and excited" to help lead the organization into its next chapter, and she will officially begin on September 22.

The latest on the trash strike 🗑️ ♻️

What you need to know this morning: Regular Monday customers should put their trash out before 7 AM. Regular Friday customers who have not yet had their trash picked up should put their trash out before 7 AM as well.

The Standley Street Yard Waste Compost site will be open daily through Saturday from 9 AM to 3 PM for both recycling and yard waste dropoff. After the fire at the site last week, the city reminded Republic of their contractual obligation to actively manage the site and outlined Republic’s failure to do so.

On payment to Republic Services, Mayor Cahill stated on September 10 that the city hasn’t paid anything to Republic since the strike started, and they have been documenting costs incurred to Beverly during the strike. He noted that the city is looking into the legal protections they have to continue to withhold payment.

What else is buzzing 🐝

  • 🍎 Looking for some good apple picking this fall? Check out Connors Farm in Danvers, Russell Orchards in Ipswich, or Brooksby Farm in Peabody. I was at Connors Farm last week, and the fresh apple cider donuts were fantastic.

  • 💵 Bevs continue to share ideas on how the city can repurpose the Family Dollar building that the city bought in 2023. A downtown grocery store, a co-op marketplace, and a boutique hotel were some of the well-supported ideas shared last Tuesday night during a town meeting.

  • 🏈 The Beverly varsity football team secured their first victory of the year by beating Haverhill 28-26 on Saturday. The Panthers play Revere this Friday.

PET OF THE WEEK

📸 Cape Ann Animal Aid

Meet Kicker! This adorable little lady is only two years old and as loving as can be. She loves head scratches and will melt into a puddle and purr when you scratch behind her ears. She also loves her toys and has plenty of energy to make playtime lots of fun! She has lived in a home previously, and she would much prefer to be an only child - no other pets or children. You may wonder why she has no hair around one of her eyes. Well, the first rule of Kitty Fight Club is you can’t talk about what happens at Kitty Fight Club. Learn more and apply for adoption here.
